In a rare incursion by baseball into what has traditionally been a football-oriented event, Major League Baseball will have a float in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on New Year's Day.
The parade precedes the 96th Rose Bowl game, in which Ohio State will play Oregon.
What is believed to be the first MLB-sanctioned parade float will be 18 feet wide, 55 feet long and 25 feet high. It will include a representation of the home stadium of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, a baseball player, and, of course, roses.
Members of an Anaheim Boys & Girls Club will ride on the float. The cost is being underwritten by the Angels and the city of Anaheim.
The city of Anaheim, which has had floats in the Pasadena-based Tournament of Roses Parade before, brought the idea to MLB. It's the first of many joint events between the city and MLB leading up to Anaheim hosting the MLB All-Star Game on July 13.
